Post-Christmas in Joshua Tree

Yep. 2020 will be a year to remember, and not very fondly. No motorcycle trips for me, as you can see. But I’m just happy to be healthy and safe. Normally I don’t post my trips by car, but since this was my only escape this year, here we go.

I was excited for five days of solitude in a little homesteaders cabin out in the desert. It had not been rented in a couple weeks, so I felt pretty safe about it.

The host of the cabin told me it was very remote, and for that reason I should get there before dark. She said Google maps will get me lost and stuck in the sand, so best to follow her directions.

The last 3 miles of the desert road was the worst washboard I have ever ridden on, and the sand was pretty deep in some places. The car was rattling so badly, and then I felt a CLUNK. Uh oh. Flat tire? Who knows, it was hard to tell with all the shaking.

I arrived at my little cabin and immediately looked at my tires. No flat. But the car seemed slightly lopsided. Did I blow a shock? It looked that way. Great. I managed to find an auto place open on Sundays. So I went first thing in the morning. But before I went, I sipped my coffee and got to stare at this:

I drove s-l-o-w-l-y back out on the washboards, then pavement. To my surprise, the car handled fine. I got there, they put it on the lift and I was happy to find out nothing was wrong.

The guy told me, all looked good. That maybe some gas leaked out or something? I don’t really know but he did something and it was all good. No charge. I was more than relieved! On to JT Nat’l park for a hike!

I went to the far West entrance to Black Rock Canyon campground, where there seemed to be a lot of trailheads. It was eerie to see all the campsites empty. But also quite fabulous. The visitor’s center was open as were the trails, so they gave me some maps and recommended a few good trails and off I went on my 3-hour hike. Here are some things I saw:

What does it look like to you? A turtle? A mountain lion? Hmmm
These suckers are sharp!
Dunno what happened to this poor guy. How he’s feeling now that the Vikings are no longer in the playoffs maybe?
This reminds me of something you’d find at the bottom of the ocean.

After my hike, I gathered some food from town, then headed off to my little cabin in the sand. I took a hot shower, poured a glass of red, then sat out by the fire and stared up at the full moon. I am still waiting to see a UFO. Or a tortoise. Either or both would be cool.

Sleep well wherever you are, I know I will.

  6. Hi Denise, What a beautiful cabin! So cozy! I don,t suppose anyone would come to cabin on such terrible rods. Would be bad on your motorcycle. I can imagine what your Dad is thinking up there. How long are you staying? Please be careful as your Mom always worries about you. Have a healthy and happy new year! We are in another snow storm warning. Winds are not as bad as last snow.we had 6 inches with that one. Have a safe trip home.Love you!
